Proposals to classify reserves in Golden Bay Ward

We sought your feedback on proposals to formally classify Council-administered reserves across Golden Bay/Mohua Ward. Submissions closed on 18 May and a hearing will be held on 4 June 2026 for those submitters who asked to speak to their submission.

These decisions help guide how local reserves are managed, used, and protected into the future.

What is this about?

Many existing reserves in Golden Bay Ward (171 land parcels in total) have never been formally classified under the Reserves Act 1977.

Council proposes to classify each of these reserves as one of the following categories:

  • Scenic Reserve
  • Historic Reserve
  • Recreation Reserve
  • Local Purpose Reserve (of various types)

Each classification has a different purpose and influences how the land can be used and managed.

Why does reserve classification matter?

Before a draft Reserve Management Plan (RMP) can be publicly consulted on, the Reserves Act requires that all included reserves are first classified.

Classification:

  • Sets the primary purpose of each reserve
  • Guides future decisions about activities, development, protection, and use
  • Helps ensure reserves are managed consistently and transparently

Any future management of these reserves must align with their classification.

When can I give feedback?
