Raised crossing construction update - 22 April 2024
There’s been a slight adjustment to the closure times for a part of Champion Road as a new raised crossing is built outside Garin College.
The original plan was for daytime only closures tomorrow 23 April and Wednesday 24 April in the section between Salisbury Road roundabout and Kareti Drive, however the road now needs to be closed for the entire time.
This means this road closure will stay closed from 7.00 am Tuesday 23 April until 6.00 pm on Wednesday 24 April.
There will not be any night works, but the section of road where the construction of the raised pedestrian crossing is being done, won’t be drivable.
We apologise for the last-minute change in schedule and hope it won’t cause too much disruption.
Raised crossing construction
We are building a new raised pedestrian crossing on Champion Road outside Garin College. This work will be completed in two stages.
Stage 1 will take place between Monday 15 and Sunday 21 April. During this time, Champion Road will have two lanes operating with pedestrian and cyclist diversions in place. However, some on-street parking along Kareti Drive may be temporarily removed.
Stage 2 involves a two-day road closure between the hours of 7am and 6pm on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 April. Champion Road will be closed as a thoroughfare between the Woolworths entrance and Kareti Drive.
Signed detour routes will be in place via Kareti Drive and Templemore Drive. There will be no on-street parking available on one side of Kareti Drive and Templemore Drive. This is to ensure all vehicles can safely travel through the detour route.
During Stage 2, the Route 1 eBus will also detour via Kareti Drive, Templemore Drive and Salisbury Road, and the bus stops on Champion Road will be closed.
If you taking the eBus southbound (towards Richmond) then please use the existing bus stop on Sailsbury Road near Woolworths. If you are travelling northbound (towards Nelson) then please use the new temporary bus stop on Kareti Drive.
Should this closure be delayed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the alternative dates are 26 and 27 April.
Access to properties will be maintained with the help of our on-site traffic management team.

Champion Road work due to start shortly.
We’re planning a new look, safer Champion Road between Salisbury Road and Hill Street.
A group of community members has worked with our project team to develop a pilot layout of cycle ways and safety improvement on this stretch of the road.
Part of the project includes the construction of a new raised pedestrian crossing outside Garin College and separated cycle lanes.
These works are being done jointly under the Waka Kotahi funded Streets for People and Transport Choices programmes.
We are planning to use materials that can be repurposed. This means once the new layout is down, and we find it needs tweaking, we have the flexibility to do that simply and efficiently.
This work is scheduled to start in December.
