Council has been working with landowners on a series of plan changes to open up pockets of land for development in some our local centres. We will be consulting with our communities next year (2022).

These plan changes are in response to the District's very high rates of urban growth and housing shortages. These plan changes will seek to rezone land for housing in Murchison, Brightwater, Wakefield, Mapua and to change the residential rules for land in Motueka West, Wakefield and Mapua to provide a more enabling consenting framework for higher housing densities.

This will have the benefit of incentivising more efficient use of land for housing and contributes to implementing the Nelson Tasman Future Development Strategy 2019.
