Plans progress

Over the next few months, you’ll be seeing and hearing more about the planned Motueka community pool.

We’re testing the water and want to get a feel for what people would like to see as we develop our plans.

The concept of a pool has been eagerly advocated by Motueka community members for more than 25 years, and the project was significantly advanced with the purchase of land for the future pool site earlier this year.

The community is moving forward with its fundraising, aiming to gather around $4.4 million, while funds for the rest of the project have been allocated in our 10-Year Plan, for construction potentially beginning in 2027.

We’re looking at a total budget of around $20 million, including the community-funded amount, but there’s a lot of water to flow under the bridge before the first spade goes into the ground.

Early plans and feasibility concepts for the pool are for it to have a lane pool, a learn-to-swim and a toddler’s pool, and a strong desire for a hydrotherapy pool and spa to also be included.

Further down this page you can see what other places around the country have done with similar budgets. There’s information about what we can and can’t afford, and there’s a space where you can leave your thoughts and ideas.

Expectations

What the budget will let us do and what we can't afford

With assistance from the Motueka community we are proposing to build a community pool complex.

Early plans for the centre are potentially for it to have a lane pool, a learn to swim and a toddlers pool, possibly a hydrotherapy pool and spa.

Here's an idea of what it could look like.

We will want to hear from you as we develop the plans.

We'll be looking for your input on what the development looks like. For example, colour schemes, how the facility's features are configured, even ideas for landscaping and styling.

But we must ensure this new community pool fits within the set budget of around $20 million.

The complex will focus on activities including fitness, learn to swim and things like school swimming competitions.

So, features like wave pools, hydro-slides, lazy rivers, diving boards, even a cafe won't fit within the budget.

While this would be a cool pool, it doesn't fit the budget!

What do community pools look like in other places?

We been in touch with several towns and cities around the country to find out what their community pools look like.

They've sent us these pictures and given us an idea of what you can get for your money.

Before we take the plunge, we'd like to hear from you.

Remember we are working together within fairly tight budget, but we'd still like to know what's important to you

We were fundraising for this project 25 years ago. I would like this pool to be as large as possible. This large are deserves it.

HEP says:

A lane pool is important to me for fitness training. Richmond Aquatic Centre is too busy now and it is hard to get a lane to swim in alone.

AndrewJ says:

Please ensure pool is at least 25m long, ideally 33.3m like Riverside. Ensure lane widths are comfortable for swimmers to pass comfortably

Blabla says:

Please don't build the pool and use the funds to improve infrastructure in the region!

I would like the consideration for kayakers to use the pool for teaching rolling. Also potentially canoe polo

Amazing mahi TDC. Loving the comms! A dry sauna would be great, rather than a spa.

Build out with an indoor diving pool . Diving is a great sport and there is nowhere in the region where budding divers could train .

Eileen Beattie says:

Just remember to future proof it. ! Look to how Motueka will be like in 20 years time and build it big enough .
