Artists officially open parklet

Richmond’s newest place to take a bit of time out was officially opened with a small ceremony a couple of weeks ago.

Doing the honours and cutting the ribbon were four young artists from Garin College – Easton, Riley, Coco and Jessie – who designed the colourful artworks for the Queen Street parklet outside the shops in Upper Queen Street.

The space is designed to create a pleasant sitting area and includes a timber decked area, seating, shade, and plantings.

The plantings include delightfully fragrant Michelia and climbers that will help provide shade once they’re established.

Bicycle racks are also due to be installed

Queen Street new raised crossing

Our Tasman Alliance partner Downer NZ Ltd will be installing a new raised crossing on Queen Street between Washbourn Drive and Edward Street, replacing the existing pedestrian crossing.

The initial works will involve removing the concrete islands and replacing the existing lowered kerbs on either side of the road. We expect work to start on Monday 10 June, lasting about two weeks.

Work will be done between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm and two-way traffic will be maintained throughout this period.

There will be a weekend road closure later in the month to install the raised crossing and this will affect eBus services but, we’ll let you know closer to the time of that work.

On-site traffic management will make sure residents will always have access to their properties throughout the work.

If these closures are delayed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the work will begin a week later and happen between Monday 17 June and Sunday 30 June 2024.

New lanes are on the road.

Queen Streets new cycle lanes are on the ground.

Once they've been down for a while, we will be seeking feedback from residents and users about their experiences and thoughts about the new layout.

Plans are progressing well for the redevelopment outside the shops at the intersection of George - watch this space.

Queen Street between Salisbury Road and Hill Street.

We’re planning a new look safer Queen Street between Salisbury Road and Hill Street.

A group of community members has worked with our project team to develop a pilot layout of cycle ways and safety improvement on this stretch of the road.

Part of the project includes the development of a small park like recreational space in the area adjacent to the shops at the intersection of George Street.

We are planning to use materials that can be repurposed. This means once the new layout is down, and we find it needs tweaking, we have the flexibility to do that simply and efficiently.
