Pilot Wensley Road 30 kilometre per hour zone

We have completed the final project in our Richmond Streets for People programme by creating a safer cycling and walking network across Richmond.

This is a multi-faceted project incorporating separated cycle lanes, and a new low speed 30 kilometre an hour zone where vehicles and cyclists share the roadway.

As the Road Controlling Authority, we are introducing the 30 kilometre an hour pilot zone to provide an added layer of safety for the stretch of Wensley Road where cyclists and vehicles share the space under the new configuration.

The special speed zone can be seen on the map below and is between Heaphy and Queen Streets.

A pedestrian crossing and speed pillows have also been created in this zone. This crossing will be upgraded to a raised crossing during a full road resealing programme next year.

Legislation allows the pilot speed reduction to be in place for up to two years.

The final link in new cycleway network

Work on the fifth and final project in our majority government funded Streets for People programme is finished.

Wensley Road is the last piece of the two-year programme to develop a network of integrated cycle lanes and pedestrian safety improvements across Richmond.

Residents of the area will remember receiving information, plans and a pre implementation survey about this phase of the work last year.

A you can see on the map, this phase includes areas of separated cycle lanes, a shared 30 k/Ph low speed zone along with a new pedestrian crossing near the intersection of Crescent Street.

These plans look a little different to those shared with residents last year which included aspects of another government funded programme called Transport Choices. Unfortunately funding for that programme has been withdrawn and work can no longer proceed.

The new Streets for People improvements were done alongside planned routine sealing work done on the road by our contractor.
