Areas that are proposed to stay the same

On Leash

  • In an urban area or cemetery

Reason: Prevents nuisance issues that may be caused by dogs

Controlled Exercise Areas

  • Batchelor Ford Road

Reason: No public opposition or reasons to change this area.

  • York Park

Reason: Important to retain the limited number of dog exercise areas in Motueka.

  • Kina Beach- exposed seaward side of the beach

Reason: Support from public to retain status quo. The peninsula end of the beach is proposed to change to dogs prohibited to protect wildlife.

Prohibited

  • Breaker Bay Beach

Reason: Protects wildlife such as penguins. Early engagement generally supports this with some exceptions.

  • Kaiteriteri Beach

Reason: Consistent with KRRB who prohibit dogs in their reserve areas.

  • Motueka Sandspit – south of a line drawn through the point NZ Map Grid 2512857.1 (easting) 6009560.9 (northing)

Reason: This site meets the criteria for international significance and is important as both a high tide roost and nesting area.

  • Otuwhero Estuary and Sandspit

Reason: Important area for wildlife protection. Early engagement provided mixed feedback.

  • Saltwater Baths – Motueka

Reason: Not an appropriate area for dogs. No public comment on this area during early engagement.

The Great Taste Trail

Most of the Great Taste Trail is proposed as a leash control area.

Under the previous Great Taste Trail Bylaw, certain sections prohibited dogs due to resource consent requirements, forestry or agreements with landowners. These areas will now be prohibited under the Dog Control Bylaw.

The following areas in the Motueka Ward are proposed to continue prohibiting dogs:

  • Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve
