Areas that are proposed to stay the same
On Leash
- In an urban area or cemetery
Reason: Prevents nuisance issues that may be caused by dogs
Controlled Exercise Areas
- Dellside Reserve including track up into Richmond Hills
Reason: Public support to continue status quo
- Rough Island – Hunter Brown and Greenslade Park
Reason: Public support to continue status quo. More education signage about not letting dogs leave Rough island at low tide is requested.
- Jimmy Lee Creek Walkway South in between Cushendell rise and the Grassy Saddle
Reason: Retain this section as a popular dog exercise area
Prohibited
- Rabbit Island (including the beach)
Reason: Contested area during early engagement. Important roosting site away from airport, reducing risk of bird strike. Alternative (Rough Island) is available close by.
- Sand Island and the shell bank by Bell Island (Situated adjacent to the Nelson Airport runway disturbed birds are a hazard to aircraft)
Reason: Important area for wildlife protection.
The Great Taste Trail
Most of the Great Taste Trail is proposed as a leash control area.
Under the previous Great Taste Trail Bylaw, certain sections prohibited dogs due to resource consent requirements, forestry or agreements with landowners. These areas will now be prohibited under the Dog Control Bylaw.
The following areas in the Richmond Ward are proposed to continue prohibiting dogs:
- 35 Sandeman Road to Lansdowne Road
- Western end of Lower Queen Street to eastern end of 0 Redwood Road
- Rabbit Island, starting from western end of causeway to the ferry landing
The following areas in the Moutere Waimea Ward / Richmond Ward are proposed as a controlled exercise area:
- Bryant Road carpark to the bridge to Pugh Road
