Māpua Masterplan

We're currently in the process of developing a masterplan for how Māpua will grow into the future.

Māpua Community Survey Engagement Summary

The Council carried out a survey to understand community views on how Māpua should grow and develop in September 2022. The responses to this survey help to inform the priorities for Māpua for Tasman’s 10-year Plan 2024-2034.

Survey respondents placed high value on:

  • protecting the Māpua village character and identity;
  • fostering a friendly and safe community;
  • managing stormwater;
  • supporting the Māpua wharf area as a community and visitor focal point, and
  • the importance of wetlands, streams, the coastline and bush areas.

They thought the most important principles for future growth were that:

  • The character of Māpua is maintained;
  • The Māpua Wharf and its historical buildings are an active visitor/community focal point;
  • Stormwater runoff across the catchment is well-managed;
  • Ecological buffers along the edges of Waimea Estuary and Seaton Valley Stream are provided;
  • Well-connected streets and pathways are provided;
  • A high-quality network of open space.

Māpua is missing some community facilities, including a police station, dog park, sporting facilities, a larger supermarket, a secondary school, and improved walking and cycling paths.

Most respondents felt that there should be no increased risk to natural hazards and that we should restrict new development within hazard areas. There was a relatively even spilt between whether there was a need for more commercial land. 86% felt that there was no need for additional industrial land.

Most people want new housing to be concentrated in existing areas. There is a desire for a mix of housing types and sizes with a preference for a mix of 1 and 2-storey buildings. Over 40% want to see more retirement housing options, and over 55% want to see smaller units or apartments.

High value is placed on open space in the form of more natural/conservation land and walkways, with open spaces spread throughout Mapua. A common thread was the need for enhanced walking and cycling connections and ecological corridors.

Most respondents thought that maintaining the village feel and rural outlook in Māpua was important. Many wanted the Council to retain the rural surroundings of Māpua and not allow the sprawl of development into the wider rural area.
